For more information, call John Yarbrough at 731-541-6743. Jackson's First Wheelchair Basketball Team, the Jackson Generals, was organized in 1997 by the staff of West Tennessee Rehabilitation Center. The Generals are a Division III team and are members of the Southern Conference. Wheelchair basketball is governed by NCAA rules, with a few minor exceptions. It is a fast-paced, highly competitive sport that is open to males and females of any age. Persons with a range of disabilities participate in wheelchair basketball, including persons with spinal cord injuries, amputations, spina bifida, and any other disability that limits someone from participating in "able-body" sports.
The Generals are two-time winners of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) Division III National Championship Tournament. The team was originally formed to benefit current and former patients with disabilities, as well as community members, in a geographical area where persons with disabilities were often excluded from organized community recreational activities due to physical and architectural barriers, attitudes regarding disabilities, and/or lack of transportation. For more information, call Karen Gurley toll-free in West Tennessee at 1-888-425-6930, or at 731-541-5396.
