Pediatrics - Children who become ill or are injured need a hospital that recognizes their special needs. No one likes to think of a child being sick or hurt - but illness and accidents are part of childhood. When it's necessary for your child to have treatment, surgery, or tests, our Pediatric Unit provides just the right place, the right equipment, and the right people.

The true value of our unit lies in the expertise of its pediatricians and its nurses. Our staff is chosen with children in mind, and their comfort is the number one priority. Each child is cared for as an entire person, with their physical, emotional, and psychological needs met. Little General, the tall blue spotted puppy, is our mascot. He appears at community events to promote health and safety and is often seen on the unit cheering up sick children. Wherever he goes, children light up and wrap their arms around him. Kids just love Little General.

POPS (Pediatric Orientation Program) tours are designed for young children to better acquaint them with a hospital. The fears of being admitted to a hospital are lessened by becoming more familiar with our Pediatric Unit and its staff. School groups and scouts as well as other organized groups may take advantage of a POPS tour by calling 731-541-6751.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit - This Level II unit consists of 4 acute care plus 2 intermediate care beds. In conjunction with Vanderbilt Children's Hospital in Nashville, it is equipped with the latest technology to care for acutely ill children. It is staffed by board-certified pediatric intensivisits who are also available to consult with local pediatricians. Referrals are made from across West Tennessee.

Child Life Services - A new addition to our Pediatric and PICU units is Lori Traywick, Certified Child Life Specialist.  Her role is to eliminate the stress and anxiety of pediatric patients and their families during their stay at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.  Lori does this by explaining tests and procedures to patients and families, using distraction techniques, and encouragement during their procedures. She also offers therapeutic and recreational play opportunities for the patient and family members. Traywick strives to answer all of your questions and to make sure you are as comfortable as possible during your stay.

Kiwanis Center for Child Development - The Center is an early intervention educational program for children from birth to age three who have developmental delays. It is a community health clinic, providing medical care, pediatric therapy, and assessment services for children from birth to age 18. It also serves as a resource center in working with day cares to incorporate developmentally-delayed children into programs with typically-developing children.

The Kid's Academy is also available as a child care resource. This is a program that provides educational and child care services in an inclusive environment. Housed at the Kiwanis Center in Jackson, the Kid's Academy offers a unique program that combines typically-developing children and children with special needs in a specialized educational setting. Each classroom uses a preschool curriculum to guide their daily activities. Supervising teachers have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and teacher assistants have been highly trained.

The Center is a grantee of the Tennessee Department of Education and Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities. Our goal is to provide appropriate stimulation and treatment to enable children to develop to their maximum potential. For more information, call 731-668-9070.

Southwest Tennessee Child Care Resource and Referral  is a vital link to the community. The Resource Center was developed to provide services, referrals, training, and materials to teach and train child care staff members and parents. Throughout the eleven counties of the southwest district of Tennessee, a network has been cultivated connecting the Resource Center, child care facilities, parents, and other child care providers. This network is a successful way to obtain valuable information and assistance for caring for children with special needs, health issues, developmentally appropriate practice, and related topics of interest.

Tennessee's Early Intervention System (TEIS) - We all want our children to do well and to have opportunities as they grow. However, some babies may need extra, special help to grow and develop. TEIS is dedicated to providing support for families of young children with special needs. These services are provided in a way that makes sense to the family and works within its lifestyles and schedules. TEIS helps families find the easiest way to make sure their child gets the assistance that is needed to grow and develop to the best of the child's ability. Free developmental screenings are offered monthly at most health department offices located throughout West Tennessee. For a screening schedule, click hereExamen de Desarrollo Gratis. Seeing, hearing, moving, talking, and thinking are very important abilities. If you think your baby may be having trouble doing any of these things, call TEIS today at 1-800-852-7157.
