Departments and Services
Nursing Care
Registered nurses and licensed practical nurses provide the backbone of patient care at Gibson General Hospital. Around the clock they move quietly and efficiently to watch patients' progress and render care. Whether in the emergency room, surgery suite, or medical patient wing, our nursing staff provides the expertise and caring to not only fulfill physicians' orders, but to meet patients' needs.
Laboratory and Pathology Services
Routine tests on blood and other body fluids are the regular function of the Laboratory. This diagnostic information assists your physician with a proper diagnosis and helps determine the treatment process. The Laboratory also maintains all blood bank services.
Our Laboratory is committed to maintaining a standard of excellence and service to our patients, and is accredited by the College of American Pathology. The Lab is staffed around the clock by licensed personnel.
Medical Care
Physicians on the medical staff of Gibson General Hospital work together to assure that a full range of services is available for patients. They also participate in quality reviews and decision-making to provide clinical treatment for patients in keeping with advances in medical technology.
The Medical Staff at Gibson General Hospital provides a balance of primary care and specialty physicians to meet the health care needs of the community. Areas of medical specialty include:
- Family Practice
- Radiology
- Internal Medicine
- Podiatry
- General Surgery
Medical office buildings for many of the medical staff members are located on hospital property to add to your convenience in receiving health services.
Emergency
In an emergency, Gibson General Hospital provides the immediate care that makes the difference. Our Emergency Department is staffed 24 hours a day. The nurse will evaluate your status on arrival, and a physician is available for prompt attention in emergency care.
Our Emergency Department is equipped and staffed to handle all medical and accidental emergencies; however, when a patient's condition exceeds our capability to provide a specialist's care, we initiate transfer by helicopter or ambulance to a larger medical center.
At Gibson General Hospital, we are always ready to intervene with modern, caring medical treatment to lessen the trauma of an emergency.
For an ambulance, dial 911.
Pharmacy
All patient medications ordered by physicians are provided through the hospital's licensed pharmacists. The pharmacists monitor each patient's drug profile for possible drug interactions to avoid additional problems.
Respiratory Care
Respiratory Care assists the physician with diagnosis and treatment of all forms of respiratory (lung) dysfunction. This may be as simple as oxygen administration or as complex as mechanically assisted breathing.
Surgery
The Surgery Department has two modern, well-equipped operating suites, one which is used for GI procedures, and also one well-equipped cysto room. Many surgery and diagnostic procedures are done on an outpatient or 'same day surgery' basis. Some of the most common procedures are: hernia, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, tonsilectomy, carpal tunnel, breast biopsy, etc.
Health Information
The patient's complete hospital record is stored in the Health Information Department. It contains all the test results, all the medication received, and a summary of progress while a patient is in the hospital.
The Health Information Department works under a Code of Ethics similar to the physician's. Patients can rest assured that their records are kept confidential and are released only with their permission.
Radiology (X-ray)
Our Radiology Department offers a variety of services necessary to assist physicians in making a prompt and accurate diagnosis.
We offer general diagnostic and fluoroscopic exams, echocardiograms, ultrasound, and CT scans (computed tomography). We are especially proud of our Mammography Center, which is fully accredited by the American College of Radiology and MQSA (FDA). The Mammography Center is staffed by female technologists who have special certification and training in Mammography.
Food and Nutrition Services
The Food and Nutrition Services Department is under the direction of a Registered Dietitian with supervision by a Certified Dietary Manager. The Dietitian is available for nutritional support or education. Because nutrition is an important part of treatment, a patient's physician prescribes the diet that best meets the special nutritional needs of each patient.
The cafeteria is open to visitors for breakfast and the noon meal. Outpatient Nutrition Education is available by appointment.
Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy enables many patients to return home with less time spent in the hospital. Physical Therapy uses various treatments as well as therapeutic exercise to return patients to their prior level of independence.
Physical Therapy services are provided for outpatients as well as inpatients. These services must be ordered by a physician and are performed under the direction of a licensed physical therapist.
Our range of services encompasses medical, surgical, neurological, orthopedic and sports. Physical Therapy services are available for adults, geriatric patients, and children.
