The Private Act legislation that created the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital District requires the District to provide medical care for everyone regardless of their ability to pay. During 2009, the District provided $79,735,920 in charity care, including $655,977 for Madison County jail and prison inmates.

The mission of the District and West Tennessee Healthcare is to provide high quality, compassionate healthcare. Non-core mission-driven services are provided at a monetary loss by the organization to underserved populations. These services would have to be performed by another organization if this organization was not responsible for them. Through grants, free services, community partnerships, and the West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation, projects and services are implemented to improve the health status of all. As a not-for-profit, public entity, West Tennessee Healthcare believes strongly in its responsibility to generously give back to the communities that it serves.

Ways that we help others outside our hospital walls:

West Tennessee Healthcare has a long history of supporting worthwhile organizations such as the Carl Perkins/Exchange Club Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse, Boy Scouts of America, Wo/Men's Rape Assistance Program, Madison-Haywood Developmental Services, and more.

To enhance healthcare-related educational programs, West Tennessee Healthcare has contributed more than $2 million to many of these same institutions to help with nursing programs, additional instructors, additional equipment, and physical plant.

Economic Impact: With more than 5,000 employees scattered throughout our 18-county service area, the economic impact of those employees can be felt in each community. These employees spend their wages on goods and pay taxes in their communities. According to the Tennessee Hospitals Association, hospitals make an annual economic impact of $8 billion in Tennessee. In Madison County alone,  healthcare provides approximately 3,800 jobs with annual payroll of more than $150 million.
