DEPARTMENTS AND SERVICES
Medical/Surgical Services
The Medical/Surgical Department has a total of 48 patient beds. Included in these are the ten beds that qualify for Skilled Care, which are our Swing Beds. This area also includes our pediatric beds.
The nursing Staff in this area has been carefully trained to meet the needs of the patients.
Surgery
The Surgery Department consists of two modern well-equipped operating suites. Many surgery and diagnostic procedures are done on an outpatient or "one day" basis. With few exceptions, surgery patients are taken to the Recovery Room immediately following surgery where they are constantly observed and cared for until they recover from the effects of anesthesia.
Emergency Department
Construction on a new Emergency Deparmtnet is underway. The groundbreaking ceremony was January 19, 2006. The Emergency department at Humboldt General Hospital is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ready to serve the emergency healthcare needs of the community. The ER is well equipped, and it has a staff of qualified, full-time nurses with specialized training in emergency care. A physician is also on call at all times ready to provide patients with any needed medical treatment. As an affiliate of Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, Humboldt General's ER has a direct link with Jackson's Emergency Center, and patients who should need more extensive care can be transferred there within 15-20 minutes by ambulance or by emergency helicopter (AirEvac).
Respiratory Care
Highly trained personnel in the Respiratory Care Department administer respiratory therapy treatments and Oxygen to help promote and restore proper lung function. The staff also provides a variety of diagnostic cardiopulmonary testing, such as pulmonary function studies, arterial blood gas analysis, electrocardiograms (EKG), and Holter monitoring. The Respiratory Care Department also provides electroencephalograpy (EEG) testing and cardiovascular stress testing. The staff of this department takes pride in helping patients breath easier.
Physical Therapy
The Physical Therapy services are provided to in-patients as will as outpatients. These services must be ordered by a physician and are under the direction of a registered Physical Therapist.
Our range of services encompasses in-patient, medical, surgical, geriatric and pediatric patients. Outpatient services include orthopedic spars and industrial medicine.
Radiology (X-Ray)
X-rays are one of the most valuable aids to doctors in diagnosing illnesses, and are made at the request of the attending physician.
In addition to x-ray, this department provides the physician with several other services: CT (Computerized Axial Tomography), x-ray pictures of tissue-thin "slices' of the body; Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, and Mammography. All of these services, plus general x-ray/fluoroscopy, provide our physicians with essential diagnostic information. The results of these procedures are reported directly to the attending physician.
Pathology and Laboratory Services
The Humboldt General Hospital Laboratory provides a variety of tests. Tests that are not performed in our laboratory are referred to Medical Center Laboratory.
Our laboratory is committed to maintaining a standard of excellence and service to our patients, and is accredited by the College of American Pathology. The lab is staffed around the clock by licensed personnel.
Blood Bank
A blood bank is maintained by the Hospital laboratory and is supplied through the Lifeline Volunteer program of the West Tennessee Regional Blood Center.
Pharmacy Services
Drug Therapy is an important part of your medical treatment. We have qualified pharmacists in the hospital pharmacy to prepare your medications to the exact specifications of your physician.
Social Work Services
This Department was established to meet the psychosocial needs of patients as these relate to acute and chronic episodes of illness. The hospital social worker will serve patients and families in the following ways:
- Psychosocial Assessment
- Counseling
- Education
- Discharge Planning
- Community Referrals
- Financial Assistance
Volunteer Services
Playing an important role in the daily life of the hospital are our Junior Volunteers and Red Cross Hospital Volunteers. Their purpose is to render service to the hospital and its patients, under the direction of the volunteer services Coordinator. These people assist in escorting patients to various areas of the hospital, deliver mail and flowers, provide room numbers and directions, provide support to families in waiting areas and provide support to our patients.
Food and Nutrition Services
The Food and Nutrition Services Department is under the direction of a Registered Dietician assisted by a Certified Dietary Manager. The Dietician is available for nutritional support or education. Because nutrition is an important part of treatment, a patient's physician prescribes the diet that best meets the special nutrition needs of each patient.
The cafeteria is open to visitors for the noon meal. If other meals are desired, a guest may purchase a meal ticket from the PBX Operator and a tray will be served to the guest as patient trays are distributed. Outpatient Nutrition Education is available by appointment.
Medical Records
The patient's complete hospital record is held in the Health Information Department. It contains all the tests and results, all the medication received, and a summary of progress while a patient is in the hospital.
The Health Information Department works under a code of ethics similar to the physician's, and patients can rest assured that all records are kept confidential unless personally requested otherwise.
Utilization Review/DRG
The utilization Review Department is responsible for ensuring efficient utilization of various hospital services. This is accomplished through close interaction with physicians and ancillary departments. As a service to our patients, Utilization Review Personnel obtain Pre-Certification for hospitalization as required by many private insurance companies and in some cases, Medicare. This assures optimum benefits are provided to the patients.
Inservice/Education Department
The Inservice/Education Department has continuing education programs available for educational needs within the community. On request programs such as CPR, Breast Health, Cholesterol Screening, Smoking Cessation and various nutritional topics, are available to schools, industries, health fairs and other businesses.
