The Kirkland Cancer Center has become a regional center for cancer treatment in West Tennessee. Our goal is to continue to provide the latest technology and be the best source for cancer screenings, treatment, and support. Our patients have had the latest in diagnostic and therapeutic radiology as well as medical and surgical oncology. As part of the strategic plan for the cancer program, renovations have taken place and equipment has been updated in Radiation Oncology.
The Cancer Committee meets quarterly with members from the medical staff and other health professionals. Weekly cancer conferences focus on case management.
The Tumor Registry is staffed by two full-time certified registrars. In 2010, 1,376 new cases were diagnosed. The registry does monthly follow-up on more than 4,100 patients and continues to maintain a 90 percent follow-up rate which meets the American College of Surgeons standard. Quality assurance by physician review is done on 10 percent of the analytic cases.
Our cancer program provides free public health screenings each year for breast, prostate, colon, and skin. In addition we have Community Education Programs, Relay for Life, and Health Fairs. Area schools and industries benefit from many presentations about the prevention and early detection of cancer.
