Prenatal Education prepares you - We offer a comprehensive childbirth education program to answer all your questions and to help you have the best experience possible during early pregnancy, delivery, and the day-to-day joys and frustrations of parenting. Class sessions are both fun and informative. They are all taught by registered nurses who are certified childbirth educators with many years experience in labor and delivery and the care of new mothers and infants.
Prepared Childbirth - These classes are designed for the expectant mother and her labor partner to provide instruction on breathing, relaxation, and coping techniques for use during labor with or without medication. Become familiar with the stages and variations of labor including back labor, c-section, induction, and epidural delivery using instruction, video, and interactive floor activities. This class includes a tour of the Labor and Delivery area at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. One evening class weekly for four weeks 6:30-9 p.m. A two-part Saturday series is also offered 9 a.m.-3 p.m. $50.
Breastfeeding - helpful for moms planning to breastfeed and those trying to decide. Taught by one of our board-certified lactation consultants who is also a Registered Nurse. This class is for moms only. $10
Siblings - for those soon-to-be big brothers and sisters, 3-12 years of age. Class watches a video, makes a gift for the new baby and tours the nursery. Children receive a T-shirt that proudly states that "I'm the big brother/sister." $15 each or $20 per family.
Infant Care - covers the basics of taking care of newborns (umbilical cord care, circumcision care, diaper rash, colic, bathing, burping, bonding, and more). $10
Infant and Child Massage - To a baby, touch is talk. What better way to begin a lifetime of communication with your child? These three weekly sessions are designed for babies four weeks of age or older and are taught by pediatric physical therapists who are certified infant massage instructors. Anyone who has ever had children knows that parenting is a full-time responsibility with great rewards; but everyone has questions. Realizing that all parents need advice at one time or another, our Parenting and Community Education programs cover a wide variety of topics that interest parents whether they have a newborn or are in the middle of parenting a teen.
Super-Sitter - a class designed for youth, ages 11-14 to learn how to be responsible babysitters. Safety is emphasized as well as how to keep both the children and the parents happy. Also, learn how to start and maintain your own babysitting business. $15
Babyfest and Beyond - This is a fun, educational, and informational event for parents-to-be, or parents with young children.
Girl Talk - a class designed for mothers and daughters ages 9 -12 to increase their communication and learn about sexuality, decision making and values. $30
Girls Weekend Getaway - this is a fun, exciting time to pamper yourself, relax, and rejuvenate! Call 541-6448 for more information.
Straight Talk for Guys - for fathers and sons, ages 10-13, to learn about and establish communication regarding their physical development, reproduction, decision making, and other issues as they mature into young men. Alternate classes for mothers and sons are available. $30
Pediatric First Aid and CPR - American Heart Association certification class designed for those who would like to learn the basic skills about how to manage illness and injury of a child during the first few minutes of an emergency until professional help arrives. Designed for child care providers and anyone who needs a certification card. $40 per person/$50 per couple. 660-1185.
Heartsaver CPR - American Heart Association basic life-saving class about how to perform CPR on an adult, a child, and an infant. Designed for parents, grandparents, or anyone who does not need a certification card. $25 per person/$40 per couple. 660-1185.
As your community hospital, we focus on health education, prevention of illness, and the promotion of wellness behaviors at home, in schools, and workplaces. If your organization or school would like a speaker to present a topic related to women or children's health, please call 541-4948.
Support Groups - Realizing that you are not alone can be a real help when trying to cope with a difficult and traumatic time in your life. Support groups respect confidentiality and are offered at no charge.
"Journeys" Infertility support - For couples struggling with fertility issues. This group wants to provide support and education to help couples through this journey in their life. For more information, call 731-541-4948
