Kirkland Cancer Center is the first in the region to offer Varian Medical System’s TrueBeam System, the latest in radiotherapy treatment.
TrueBeam is the first of its kind. It is a “super” accelerator designed to advance the treatment of lung, breast, prostate, head and neck cancers and other types of cancer with unprecedented speed and accuracy. With TrueBeam, Kirkland Cancer Center patients spend less time in the treatment room, are more comfortable and receive more precisely targeted treatments.
TrueBeam can deliver treatments up to 50 percent faster than earlier systems. A treatment that typically takes 40 minutes to an hour can potentially be completed in just 5 to 20 minutes. It can even save some patients from having multiple treatments.
The precision of TrueBeam is measured in increments of less than a millimeter. This accuracy is made possible by the system’s sophisticated architecture, which establishes a new level of synchronization between imaging, patient positioning, motion management, beam shaping and dose deliver technologies, performing accuracy checks every 10 milliseconds throughout the entire treatment. This increased level of precision can make it possible for our doctors to treat a moving lung tumor as if it were standing still.
With the TrueBeam technology, Kirkland Cancer Center offers greater patient comfort by shortening treatment and improves precision by leaving less time for tumor motion during dose delivery.
