"The staff at the Center’s Adult Day Services are like family to us. They treat Ben like a friend, speak to him like he matters and push him to do more. They are great cheerleaders in promoting good health for my son and encourage him to keep moving."
– Louise (mother to Ben who has been attending the Center since 2012)
The Therapy & Learning Center is the only center in West Tennessee specializing in day services for the severely-involved developmentally delayed population. The Center offers a full range of activities to enhance the lives of this special needs population.
The Center provides day services for adults, upon graduation from high school, each weekday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This program is available for physically and/or mentally challenged adults who qualify for services through the Division of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (DIDD) or the Tennessee CHOICES Program.
The program includes personal care training as well as therapeutic and medical services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, if needed. Aquatic therapy is available in our pool facility for clients in need of this service. In addition to classroom and therapy staff, the Center also has registered nurses who oversee each client's medical needs and a cook who prepares meals tailored for individual dietary needs. Daily therapeutic positioning and individually designed cognitive activities are provided to promote physical and mental stimulation for adult clients.
A typical day in the adult program will look different for everyone involved. Since we provide day services ranging from total care to those who are fairly independent, a person's day has to be tailored specifically for them. For the person with total care needs, our staff are prepared to assist with all aspects of care ranging from feeding, toileting, oral care, and therapeutic needs, as well as engaging the person throughout the day in activities of their choice. For the person who is fairly independent, the daily schedule would typically include breakfast, morning exercise, Art & Music therapy, daily living skill activities, social time (including games, music, books, arts & crafts, etc.), lunch, and afternoon snack. We also provide physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy as ordered by the participant's physician.
Clients for the adult program should be approved for the Medicaid Waiver through the Division of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (DIDD) or the CHOICES program and should have already been assigned an Independent Support Coordinator or case manager prior to entering the program.
