Mammography

Mammography is the Gold Standard used to detect breast cancer and to evaluate other breast problems. The basic mammogram falls under two categories, screening and diagnostic. A screening mammogram is used for early detection. A diagnostic mammogram is performed to aide in diagnosing a breast problem or abnormality. In this case additional images are often performed.

3D Mammography (tomosynthesis) is a new technology in the fight against breast cancer and we are proud to offer this service to all of our patients as a part of your annual screening mammogram in order to capture multiple slices of breast images.

The benefits of 3D are:

  • Earlier detection
  • More reliable results-makes it easier to distinguish between harmless abnormalities and areas of concern
  • Fewer callbacks

During your mammogram, your breast will be compressed.

Breast compression is necessary in order to:

  • Even out breast thickness in order to visualize all of the tissue
  • Visualize small abnormalities less likely to be hidden by overlying breast tissue
  • Allow the use of a lower Xray dose
  • Help to hold the breast still to minimize blurring caused by motion

Your mammogram will be performed by a mammography registered Radiologic Technologist and your exam will be read by a mammography trained Radiologist.
