Milan General Hospital, a member of the American Hospital Association and the Tennessee Hospital Association, is licensed by the State of Tennessee and has been approved by the Department of Health and Human Services for participation in Medicare and TennCare programs. Milan General has its own advisory board composed of citizens of City of Milan.

Milan General Hospital is a 70-bed acute care facility and has been in operation since 1941 when it began as Clemmer Clinic. The hospital became a wholly-owned affiliate of West Tennessee Healthcare on January 1, 1998. The hospital is located at 4039 Highland Street, Milan, Tennessee. The service area spans West Tennessee, with the primary counties being Gibson and Carroll.

Departments and Services

The Emergency Department meets the needs of the community by providing a vital service to those who require immediate attention for an illness or injury. The ER is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The department is well-equipped with a staff of full-time nurses who are specially trained in emergency care. The emergency physician is available in-house 24 hours a day. Our ER has been designated as a Basic Pediatric Emergency Facility by the State of Tennessee.

Surgery Surgical procedures ranging from diagnostic endoscopies to complex general and vascular operations are performed in our modern, well-equipped surgical suites. Many procedures are done on an outpatient or one-day basis. With few exceptions, surgical patients are taken to the recovery room immediately following surgery. There they are constantly observed and cared for until they recover from the effects of anesthesia. Complex surgical cases may be observed in the Critical Care Unit for several hours.

The staff of the Environmental Services Department works to provide a clean and pleasant environment for our guests. The department also participates in infection control activities to maintain a clean atmosphere for patients, employees, and visitors.

Food and Nutrition Services provides meal service and nutritional care for our patients. Nutrition is an important aspect of treatment. The physician prescribes the diet that best meets the special nutritional needs of the patient. The staff in Food and Nutrition fills the diet order while striving to provide food preferences. A registered dietitian is responsible for assessing the nutritional status of patients and providing nutritional support or education.

The cafeteria is open for lunch 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Monday through Friday. Guest trays can be sent to persons attending patients by making reservations through the Business Office. Outpatient nutrition education is available by appointment.

The Health Information Management Department is responsible for maintaining permanent medical records on all patients treated in this facility. These records are vital to you and your physician to document your current treatment and for future reference as well. Information contained in medical records is confidential and is not available for release without your written consent or a court order.

The Medical/Surgical Department has a total of 32 patient beds. The nursing staff in this area has been carefully trained to meet the needs of patients. Milan General Hospital offers a well-equipped critical care unit staffed by ACLS certified personnel.

Pathology and Laboratory Services at Milan General Hospital are coordinated through the West Tennessee Healthcare Regional Laboratory System. Our laboratory offers a wide variety of tests. Tests not performed in our laboratory are referred to the Medical Center Laboratory located at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

The laboratory is staffed on an around-the-clock basis by nationally registered and state licensed technicians and technologists under the direction of Board-certified pathologists (physicians specially trained in laboratory medicine.) The laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathologists, the premier laboratory accrediting agency and licensed by the State of Tennessee. The laboratory participates in numerous outside competency and proficiency testing programs to ensure the quality of results reported to your physician.

Rehabilitation Services — A comprehensive rehabilitation program is offered providing physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. The goals of this department are to assist patients in recovering to their fullest potential from illness or injury. Persons who can benefit from the full scope of rehabilitation services may include those individuals with stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic diagnoses (including joint replacement and amputation), multiple sclerosis and many other neurological and physical illnesses or injuries. Rehabilitation services are available in the areas of skilled care, acute care and outpatient care.

Our Radiology (X-Ray) Department offers a variety of services necessary to assist physicians in making a prompt and accurate diagnosis.

We have a CT Scanner (Computerized Axial Tomography) also known as a CAT Scanner, which takes X-Ray pictures of designated areas of the body, in thin slices. We have general and vascular ultrasound with color flow doppler for viewing the veins and arteries.

An area of which we are especially proud is our mammography suite. We are accredited by the American College of Radiology and we meet FDA requirements. We have registered technologists who perform the mammograms. We have general and fluoroscopy X-ray units to perform trauma, routine, and diagnostic procedures. The results of all procedures are reported directly to the attending physician.

The Respiratory Care Department is a group of allied health care professionals who provide cardiopulmonary services for Milan General Hospital and community and assure the best care possible to improve the quality of patients' lives. Services include aerosolized breathing treatments, blood gas analysis, pulmonary function testing, stress testing, electrocardiogram, electroencephalograms, oxygen administration and ventilator monitoring.

Social Services Personnel from this department are available to assist patients and their families with the difficulties which may be associated with illness. Assistance is given in securing care following discharge, including home health visits, equipment and referrals to community agencies. Placement options may include skilled care, intermediate care, and assisted living care arrangements. This department, in conjunction with the business office, works to assist those individuals with financial issues that may relate to their medical needs.

The Utilization Review Department takes responsibility for ensuring efficient use of various hospital services. This is accomplished through close interaction with physicians and support departments.

  • To meet the needs of our patients, Utilization Review personnel obtain Pre-certification for hospitalization.
