What is an Oncology Nurse Navigator and How They Can Help

The role and services of an Oncology Nurse Navigator include:

  • Providing  emotional support to patients and families
  • Coordinating services among medical providers
  • Locating financial assistance resources
  • Arranging patient transportation
  • Educating patients and families about their disease and treatment plans
  • Linking patients to health care resources quickly
  • Providing education related to clinical trials
  • Communicating with physicians and other members of the healthcare team
  • Obtaining patient referrals to community services for support
  • Arranging palliative care, hospice, and home healthcare services
  • Facilitating timely access to quality medical and psychosocial care
  • Promoting patient-focused care

Contacting a Nurse Navigator

Patients may be referred to an Oncology Nurse Navigator through primary care providers, surgeons, medical oncologists and their staff, social workers, case managers, nurses on the floor or self referral.  You may contact the nurse navigators directly as noted below, but we also welcome referrals by email and internet.
