Heart and Vascular Diagnostic Procedures — Identifying the Problem

West Tennessee Heart and Vascular Center (WTHVC) offers a variety of non-invasive and invasvie diagnostic procedures. These procedures can help doctors identify and treat multiple cardiovascular abnormalities. Some abnormalities may include, but are not limited to: heart attacks, arrhythmias, heart failure, and valvular disorders.

  1. Heart Care: (Non-Invasive)
    1. EKG
    2. Holter
    3. Echocardiography (Ultrasound of the Heart)
    4. Stress Tests
    5. Nuclear Stress Tests
    6. Stress Echo
  2. Heart Care: (Invasive)
    1. Left Heart Catheterization (Heart Cath)
    2. Right and Left Heart Catheterization (Heart Cath to both sides of the heart)
    3. TEE Trans-esophageal Echo (Specialized ultrasound of the heart with sedation)
    4. Intravascular Ultrasound (Sound imaging inside the heart artery)
    5. FFR (measuring pressures inside the heart artery)
  3. Heart Care: (Cardiac Imaging)
    1. CT Coronary Angiography:  (CT Scan of the Heart with contrast (dye) to see the arteries and veins).
    2. Cardiac MRI: Evaluates masses, function and viability of the heart.
    3. Nuclear Medicine: Shows how well the blood flows through the heart muscle and how well the heart muscle squeezes. Often done at the same time as a stress test.
  4. Brain and Stroke Imaging:
    1. CT imaging and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the brain.
    2. CT Angiography (filling the vessels with contrast (dye) while doing a CT scan).
    3. CT Perfusion imaging to see if a part of the brain is not receiving circulation to it.
  5. Vascular Imaging:
    1. Noninvasive physiological studies to include segmental pressure measurements, pulse volume recording (PVR) evaluation and Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) measurement
    2. Arterial and Venous Duplex evaluation
    3. CT angiography of the head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, and extremities
    4. Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) includes non contrast techniques of the head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, and extremities.

Heart and Vascular Intervention Treatments — Delivering the Solution

  1. Heart Care Intervention Treatments:
    1. PCI: Balloon Angioplasty and Stent Implants
    2. Atherectomy (Removal of plaque from inside the heart artery)
    3. Thrombectomy (Removal of a Clot from inside the heart artery)
    4. Rotational Ablation (Removal of Calcified Plaque from insider the heart artery)
    5. CTO (Using catheters to redirect the blood flow through an artery that has been blocked for a long period of time)
  2. Heart Surgery:
    1. Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery
    2. Aortic Valve Repair and Replacement
    3. Mitral Valve Repair and Replacement
  3. Arrhythmia Care:
    1. Cardioversion (electrical shock to return the heart rhythm to normal).
    2. Pacemaker
    3. Bi-Ventricular Pacemaker
    4. Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator
    5. Bi-Ventricular Cardiac Defibrillator
    6. E.P. Diagnostic Mapping of the heart’s electrical system
    7. Ablation (Repair) of the heart’s electrical system
    8. Cryoballoon Ablation
  4. Stroke Treatment Intervention:
    1. Carotid Stent Placement in appropriate patients.
    2. Thrombolytic Infusion (Clot Busting Drug) that is causing a stroke
    3. Thrombectomy: (Mechanical removal of a clot that is causing a stroke).
  5. Vascular Treatments:
    1. Complete endovascular treatment of blockage and abnormalities of the arteries to the legs, kidneys and intestines.  Treatment modalities include balloon angioplasty, stent placement, laser and mechanical atherectomy.  Carotid stent placement when indicated.
    2. Endovascular treatment of vascular malformations.
    3. Endovascular management of blood clots in veins of legs and arms as well as treatment of Pulmonary Embolism (PE) and Inferior Vena Cava (TVC) filter placement.
    4. Endovascular management of the lower extremities to include saphenous vein ablation.
    5. Endograft placement for thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysm as well as iliac and popliteal aneurysms.
    6. Complete Dialysis access management that includes angiography, angioplasty, stent placement as well as dialysis catheter placement and management.
  6. Resuscitation Care:
    1. Lifesaving treatment of lethal arrhythmias
    2. Post Resuscitation Hypothermia (Cooling of the body temperature to prevent swelling of the brain)

Robotic PCI

The Corindus Vascular Robotics CorPath® GRX System — the first and only FDA cleared medical device to bring robotic-assisted precision to coronary angioplasty procedures while protecting medical professionals from radiation exposure occurring in hospital catheterization laboratories.
CorPath® GRX has many advantages for both patients and doctors. Patients receive the benefit of robotic precision in the positioning of balloons and stents. For the physician, the benefits include sitting in a comfortable radiation-free workstation, designed to reduce orthopedic strain.
Benefits to the patient:

  • Robotic Precision in Positioning Stents: With the CorPath® GRX System, your doctor can move your stent a millimeter at a time to help position it exactly where you need it. The system can also measure anatomy to help your doctor choose the right stent for you.
  • Enhanced Visualization: The CorPath® GRX System enables your doctor to have an enhanced, close up view of the angiographic images and information for the entire procedure.
  • Unparalleled Control: The CorPath® GRX System allows your doctor to simply advance your stent into the right vessel at the right angle, potentially leading to a shorter procedure and less exposure to harmful radiation.

TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) is a minimally invasive procedure that treats blockages in the carotid artery that put you at risk of stroke. Jackson-Madison County General Hospital is the only facility in the state of Tennessee offering this procedure.
