For nearly a decade, Dr. Chip Scott, neurosurgeon with West Tennessee Healthcare, has brought both skill and compassion to patients across our region. His journey into neurosurgery was not a
straight line. It was a calling shaped by faith, purpose, and a desire to serve others close to home.
“I started out training as a trauma surgeon,” Dr. Scott recalls. “But God had other plans. A neurosurgeon took me under his wing, and I felt led to follow that path. It felt like a higher calling, something I was truly meant to do.”
That leap of faith led him from Alabama to Dallas, where he completed seven years of neurosurgical training, followed by work in academic medicine. Eventually, Dr. Scott was drawn to West Tennessee, settling in Jackson and joining the well-established neurosurgery program built by Dr. Neblett, who faithfully served the community for decades. Over time, the team continued to grow with the addition of physicians like Dr. Branch and Dr. Taylor, creating the strong, collaborative group of specialists that serves the region today.
Known for his warm demeanor and approachable style, Dr. Scott treats patients like family. “I am often told I am not like other neurosurgeons,” he says with a smile. “My only desire is the love of the community. God gives us gifts, and we are called to use them with humility and care.” That perspective guides every aspect of his practice.
Patients often describe Dr. Scott as down-to-earth, compassionate, and reassuring during some of life’s most difficult moments. “Dr. Scott is a great doctor,” says patient Amanda Puckett. “He’s down-to-earth and explains things in a way that’s easy to understand, while assuring you that he’s going to do his best to get you better. He goes above and beyond to make you feel taken care of during what can be a scary time.”
Before each surgery, Dr. Scott takes a quiet moment to pray with patients who wish to do so, offering calm and reassurance during what can be a frightening time. “I want patients to feel peace,” he explains. “I approach my work with light, love, and humility.”
Few people realize that before pursuing medicine, Dr. Scott attended art school. That creative foundation still influences his work today. “There is an art to neurosurgery,” he says. “Visualization, precision, attention to detail. It all connects.” The same attention to detail that serves him in the operating room is reflected in the relationships he builds with his patients.
Access to care is deeply important to Dr. Scott. Recognizing that long travel distances can be a barrier for many patients, he has worked to expand opportunities for consultations beyond Jackson. He currently offers office visits on the first Wednesday of each month in McKenzie and hopes to expand to additional West Tennessee Healthcare locations, including Paris. “Some patients simply do not have the means or ability to travel far,” he says. “If we can meet them closer to home, that can make all the difference.”
Throughout his time at West Tennessee Healthcare, Dr. Scott has seen neuroscience services grow significantly, allowing more patients to receive advanced care without leaving the region. Today, the neurosurgery team treats a wide range of conditions, from chronic back and spine pain to complex neurological disorders.
“More than 95 percent of what we see can be treated right here,” Dr. Scott explains. “And when something more specialized is needed, we make sure patients are guided to the right place. The goal is always the best possible outcome.”
That commitment to care close to home resonates strongly with patients in Henry, Carroll,Benton, Stewart, and surrounding counties. “I am not in this for recognition,” Dr. Scott says. “I am here because I care about this community and the people who live in it.”
For Dr. Scott, close to home means more than geography. It means trust, presence, and walking alongside patients during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. “When someone places their faith in me as their surgeon, that is sacred,” he says. “I never take that lightly.”
Outside the operating room, Dr. Scott enjoys spending time with his family, creating art, and staying connected to the community he serves. Those passions help ground him and reinforce why he chose this path.
“Medicine can be demanding,” he admits. “But remembering who you are serving brings everything into focus.”
As West Tennessee Healthcare continues to strengthen its neuroscience services, Dr. Scott remains focused on what matters most: compassion, humility, and access to quality care. His hope is that patients across the region know exceptional neurological and spine care is available right here at home.
In every prayer before surgery, every mile traveled, and every patient greeted with compassion, Dr. Chip Scott’s work reflects the dedication of the neurosurgeons and neuroscience teams at West Tennessee Healthcare who care deeply for the communities they serve.
