For nearly a decade William “Chip” Scott MD, neurosurgeon with West Tennessee Healthcare, has cared for patients across our region with skill, compassion and a deep sense of purpose. His path to neurosurgery was not a straight line. It was a calling shaped by faith, humility and a desire to serve people close to home.
“I started out training as a trauma surgeon,” Dr. Scott recalls. “But God had other plans. A neurosurgeon took me under his wing, and I felt led to follow that path. It felt like a higher calling, something I was truly meant to do.”
That calling took him from Alabama to Dallas, where he completed seven years of neurosurgical training before working in academic medicine. Eventually, Dr. Scott was drawn to West Tennessee, where he settled in Jackson and joined the neurosurgery program established by Dr. Neblett, who faithfully served the community for decades.
Over the years, the program has continued to grow with physicians like Dr. Branch and Dr. Taylor, creating a strong, collaborative neuroscience team dedicated to caring for patients throughout West Tennessee.
A Compassionate Approach to Neurosurgery
Dr. Scott is known not only for his surgical expertise, but also for the way he makes people feel. Patients often describe him as approachable, down-to-earth and reassuring, especially during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
“I am often told I am not like other neurosurgeons,” he says with a smile. “My only desire is the love of the community. God gives us gifts, and we are called to use them with humility and care.”
That belief shapes the way he practices medicine. For Dr. Scott, caring for patients means more than diagnosing a condition or performing a procedure. It means listening closely, explaining clearly and helping each person feel supported before, during and after their care.
“Dr. Scott is a great doctor,” says patient Amanda Puckett. “He’s down-to-earth and explains things in a way that’s easy to understand, while assuring you that he’s going to do his best to get you better. He goes above and beyond to make you feel taken care of during what can be a scary time.”
Before surgery, Dr. Scott often takes a quiet moment to pray with patients who wish to do so. It is one more way he hopes to bring comfort and peace when fear and uncertainty feel heavy.
“I want patients to feel peace,” he explains. “I approach my work with light, love and humility.”
Where Precision Meets Purpose
Before he became a physician, Dr. Scott attended art school. While that may surprise some people, he believes that creative foundation still influences his work today.
“There is an art to neurosurgery,” he says. “Visualization, precision, attention to detail. It all connects.”
Those same qualities are essential in the operating room, where precision matters. But they also show up in the way Dr. Scott builds relationships with his patients. He understands that neurosurgery can feel overwhelming, and he wants patients to know they are not just another case or diagnosis.
They are people. They are families. They are neighbors.
And they deserve to feel seen.
Expanding Access to Neurosurgery in West Tennessee
Access to specialty care is deeply important to Dr. Scott. He knows that for many patients, especially those living outside Jackson, travel can become a barrier to getting the care they need.
To help meet patients where they are, Dr. Scott currently offers office visits on the first Wednesday of each month in McKenzie. He also hopes to expand to additional West Tennessee Healthcare locations, including Paris.
“Some patients simply do not have the means or ability to travel far,” he says. “If we can meet them closer to home, that can make all the difference.”
That commitment is especially meaningful for patients in Henry, Carroll, Benton, Stewart and surrounding counties. For many of them, having access to neurosurgery consultations closer to home can bring relief, convenience and peace of mind.
“I am not in this for recognition,” Dr. Scott says. “I am here because I care about this community and the people who live in it.”
Advanced Neuroscience and Spine Care Close to Home
Throughout his time at West Tennessee Healthcare, Dr. Scott has watched neuroscience services grow in a powerful way. Today, more patients are able to receive advanced neurological and spine care without leaving the region.
The neurosurgery team treats a wide range of conditions, including chronic back pain, spine conditions and complex neurological disorders.
“More than 95 percent of what we see can be treated right here,” Dr. Scott explains. “And when something more specialized is needed, we make sure patients are guided to the right place. The goal is always the best possible outcome.”
For Dr. Scott, “close to home” means more than geography. It means trust. It means presence. It means walking alongside patients during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
“When someone places their faith in me as their surgeon, that is sacred,” he says. “I never take that lightly.”
Serving Patients With Humility and Heart
Outside the operating room, Dr. Scott enjoys spending time with his family, creating art and staying connected to the community he serves. Those parts of his life help keep him grounded and remind him why he chose this path.
“Medicine can be demanding,” he admits. “But remembering who you are serving brings everything into focus.”
As West Tennessee Healthcare continues to strengthen neuroscience services across the region, Dr. Scott remains focused on what matters most: compassion, humility and access to quality care.
His hope is simple. He wants patients across West Tennessee to know they do not always have to travel far for exceptional neurological and spine care. It is available right here, close to home.
In every prayer before surgery, every mile traveled and every patient greeted with compassion, Dr. Chip Scott’s work reflects the heart of West Tennessee Healthcare’s neurosurgery and neuroscience teams: caring deeply, serving humbly and helping patients move forward with confidence.
